Jamaica will open its third international airport next month, the Ian Fleming International Airport (named after the James Bond novelist), about five miles from Ocho Rios. (It’s the former Boscobel Airstrip that’s been renovated and expanded.)

Jamaica boasts beautiful beaches and some of the world’s best all-inclusive resorts.  Whether you’re looking for a quiet getaway with that special someone, the family vacation of a lifetime, or a great way to get a group of business associates, friends, and family together, Jamaica has an all-inclusive resort for you.

With all the media attention paid to the negative views of the Carnival Splendor’s situation last week, I wanted to share with you an article that I came across in Travel Weekly.  This Carnival Splendor passenger was traveling with her husband and two young children, and said she wanted to clear up some of the untruths she’d heard about their ordeal:

As a mother of two myself, I applaud this cruiser’s positive outlook and her willingness to share her experiences.  I especially like how she speaks to the kids’ resourcefulness.  How many kids can say they played “indoor baseball” in a cruise ship’s disco?

Tune in to NBC’s TODAY on Friday, November 19th between 10:00 am and 11:00 am, when hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb will broadcast live onboard Allure of the Seas. The TV personalities will lift the curtain on the distinguished line-up of entertainment and innovative onboard amenities that differentiate Allure from Oasis of the Seas®. Don’t miss it!

In light of this week’s engine fire aboard the Carnival Splendour bound for the Mexican Riviera, I wanted to voice my thoughts, both from the viewpoint of a professional travel agent and an avid traveler.

While the news coverage of incidents like this is warranted as a current event, unfortunately, the media attention often serves to deter people from cruising.  I work with many first-time cruisers with lots of questions, but once in a while I come across a client whose fears have obviously been fueled by what they’ve seen in the media.

A client once asked “Is the ship going to sink?  What if it turns on its side?”  No, the chances of that happening are slim to none, and in the event of any type of emergency, the ship and its crew are amply provisioned and trained to ensure your safety.

What frustrates me is that people often don’t realize that you hear about mishaps aboard cruise ships precisely because they are mishaps.  When there are no mishaps, there’s usually not much for the media to report, so you don’t hear about it.  The truth is, incidents like what has happened this week are very rare.   I don’t think these isolated incidents should be seen as a reason not to cruise.

Cruise vacations are a wonderful choice for travelers of all ages.  With so many cruise lines and itineraries to choose from, you’re almost certain to find a destination you’d like to explore with a cruise line that suits your travel style and preferences.  In terms of the value, cruising is hard to beat.  Your fare includes passage, accommodations, all meals and snacks, entertainment, recreation, and use of shipboard facilities like the gym, pools, etc.  What a great way to see the world….aboard your floating hotel!
